Children and adolescents who are prescribed a type of psychiatric drug known as atypical antipsychotics face an increased risk of rapid weight gain and other metabolic changes, according to a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. FDA cites ’safety concerns’ with new form of Zyprexa
An analysis by the Food and Drug Administration has found that a new injectable version of the schizophrenia drug Zyprexa has a “serious safety concern” because it has a high risk of causing extreme sleepiness. The FDA conducted the analysis ahead of an advisory panel meeting that will convene this week to review the new version of Zyprexa.
Parents file Zyprexa lawsuit over son’s death
The parents of recent college graduate have filed a Zyprexa lawsuit in Texas against the drug’s manufacturer, Eli Lilly & Co. Charles and Kaye Sexton’s lawsuit alleges that their son, Scott, died of pancreatitis as a result of taking the psychiatric drug Zyprexa. They also allege that Eli Lilly concealed information about the side effects of Zyprexa and misled consumers about the safety of the drug.
Study finds Zyprexa less effective, more hazardous than competitor
A new study of two leading schizophrenia drugs has found that the rate of side effects for patients taking Risperdal Consta was much lower than for patients taking Zyprexa. The study, published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, also found that Risperdal Consta was more effective at treating the long-term symptoms of schizophrenia than Zyprexa.
Judge’s ruling may allow additional Zyprexa lawsuits to proceed
Experts say that a letter sent to Eli Lilly & Co. in March by the Food and Drug Administration could mean even more lawsuits for the company over its antipsychotic drug Zyprexa. Lilly has paid more than $1.2 billion to settle roughly 29,000 claims that the drug could cause diabetes, weight gain and pancreatic infections.
