Numerous reports of adverse Zyprexa side effects like diabetes and hyperglycemia led the FDA to order the manufacturer to change the Zyprexa label. The revised labeling includes language that warns of these serious and potentially deadly risks.
Lilly settling Zyprexa lawsuits
Studies have now shown that patients who take Zyprexa and some other atypical antipsychotic drugs are 50% more likely to develop diabetes than those who take the older drugs.
Many injured users have filed Zyprexa lawsuits claiming that the drug’s inadequate labeling left them in the dark about these serious and potentially deadly risks. Ely Lilly & Co.—the manufacturer of Zyprexa—has paid hundreds of millions of dollars so far to settle such lawsuits.
Report casts doubt on effectiveness of Zyprexa
Research also indicates that many of the new drugs like Zyprexa are only slightly better, if at all, than the older antipsychotics at actually treating the symptoms for which they are prescribed.
People who suffer injuries after taking medications that do not adequately warn of serious side effects such as diabetes may have a legal right to compensation.
In fact, Lilly decided in June 2005 to set aside nearly $700 million to settle many diabetes-related lawsuits concerning Zyprexa that were pending against the company at that time. And again in early 2007, it settled more than 18,000 such lawsuits in state and federal court for nearly $500 million.
