Zinc Denture Creams
The manufacturers of Poligrip and Fixodent denture cream adhesives have received hundreds of reports of consumers who have suffered neurological damage as a result of zinc poisoning after using adhesive denture creams. Denture products that contain zinc and may lead to neurological symptoms include Super Poligrip Original, Super Poligrip Ultra Fresh, Super Poligrip Extra Care and Fixodent denture creams.
According to a study published in the medical journal Neurology, the use of zinc-containing denture creams may cause increased zinc levels in some patients. Excess amounts of zinc can lead to copper deficiencies that could cause neuropathy, or damage to the nerves. Further, patients with poorly fitting dentures may use greater amounts of denture adhesives that could put them at higher risk of developing neurological problems caused by too much zinc.
Dozens of patients or their families have filed lawsuits against the manufacturers of Fixodent and Poligrip denture creams alleging that they suffered permanent or fatal nerve damage caused by too much zinc. These lawsuits have alleged that the makers of Fixodent and Poligrip knew about the health risks associated with exposure to high levels of zinc, but failed to alter the formulation of these products for years.
