Zimmer Metal Knee Replacements

Have you experienced side effects from a Zimmer Knee Replacement?

Lawsuits are being filed for several types of Zimmer knee replacement devices alleging an unacceptable failure rate stemming from faulty design. Plaintiffs allege Zimmer knee replacements failed to provide the additional or meaningful range of motion the devices were designed to create.

If you have experienced severe knee pain, swelling, poor range of motion, device failure or loosening of the knee component of a Zimmer Knee Replacement device, you may have grounds for a lawsuit.

Problems with Zimmer Knee Replacements

The average lifespan of a knee implant is generally between 15 and 20 years, but a Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery report showed that 38% of Zimmer LPS-Flex knees loosened after only two years. More than half (56%) of patients in the study were forced to have revision surgery.

Zimmer Multidistrict Litigation (MDL)

Hundreds of Zimmer knee replacement lawsuits have been filed. These lawsuits have been consolidated into a Multidistrict Litigation (where multiple lawsuits are grouped in front of one judge for discovery purposes) in the U.S District Court of Northern Illinois.

Among the many claims, the lawsuits allege that Zimmer’s NexGen Flex Knee has a faulty design, resulting in an unacceptable failure rate.

Zimmer Settlements

In addition to these lawsuits, Zimmer has been forced to pay almost $170 million to settle charges filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The SEC alleged that Zimmer “bribed” doctors to use Zimmer knee replacement devices over other knee replacement options by offering financial compensation or consulting agreements.

Zimmer Knee Recall

Zimmer has not issued an official recall for their NexGen knee replacement devices. However, Zimmer has relabeled its LPS-Flex and CR-Flex devices and re-instructed physicians regarding the implementation of both knee replacement devices.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considered the relabeling of Zimmer’s LPS-Flex and CR-Flex devices as a “Class II” recall. According by the FDA, “exposure to a product that may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences” is considered grounds for a Class II recall.
