Virginia panel to hold hearing on Zicam lawsuits

A judicial panel in Virginia will conduct a hearing later this week to consider whether the federal lawsuits that have been filed over the cold remedy Zicam should be consolidated in a Multidistrict Litigation (MDL). Matrixx says no plans to reformulate Zicam cold remedy

A spokesperson for Matrixx Initiatives, the manufacturer of Zicam, says that the company has no plans to place a reformulated version of its recalled cold products back on the market. Matrixx recalled two of its Zicam cold remedies—“Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel” and “Zicam Cold Remedy Gel Swabs”—in June 2009 following reports that they could lead to permanent loss of smell in some patients. FDA warns of loss of sense of smell from Zicam Cold Remedies

The Food and Drug Administration has told consumers to stop using three Zicam Cold Remedy products over concerns that they could cause permanent loss of the sense of smell. The agency also ordered Matrixx Initiatives, the manufacturer of Zicam, to stop marketing the three products until they can be approved by the FDA. More »
