Tequin Side Effects
Recently, Bristol-Myers Squibb and the FDA circulated a “dear doctor” letter announcing an update to the label of Tequin. The revised label warns consumers and physicians about the drug’s link to serious side effects.
Although Bristol-Myers Squibb has not issued a Tequin recall, it announced in May 2006 that it will no longer produce and distribute the drug.
Dangerous Tequin side effects include (but are not limited to):
• Serious blood sugar changes
• Severe allergic reactions
• Central nervous system side effects
• Pain, inflammation or rupture of tendons
Hypoglycemia/hyperglycemia
Hypoglycemic symptoms include everything from “feeling bad” to coma to permanent brain damage and even death. Hypoglycemia is the result of cutting off a supply of fuel (glucose) to the brain.
Hyperglycemia, the opposite of hypoglycemia, is the result of saturating the blood with glucose. High blood sugar can be associated with diabetes and can be deadly.
On February 15, 2006, the FDA revised the labeling on Tequin to reflect the dangers of the antibiotic prescription drug. Just a few months later, on May 1, 2006, Bristol-Myers Squibb announced that it would no longer produce Tequin.
No recall has been announced so far, but a number of Tequin lawsuits have been filed. [More expert testimony]
