A congressional investigation has revealed that two Harvard psychologists—whose research helped fuel a rise in the use of antipsychotic medications among children—received at least $2.6 million in payments from drugmakers between 2000 and 2007, but failed to report these earnings to officials. Dr. Joseph Biederman and Dr. Timothy Wilens may have violated federal research rules by failing to disclose the millions they received from the drug industry, according to an investigation led by Sen. Charles Grassley.

The Arkansas attorney general has filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer of the antipsychotic drug Seroquel. Dustin McDaniel’s Seroquel lawsuit alleges that its manufacturer, AstraZeneca, marketed the drug so that doctors would prescribe Seroquel even in cases where it wasn’t needed.

Two men have filed separate Seroquel lawsuits in Illinois against manufacturer AstraZeneca. Jacob Keim and Lester Carrow allege that taking Seroquel caused them to develop diabetes and that AstraZeneca, the manufacturer of the drug, failed to adequately warn doctors and patients about the risk of Seroquel side effects.

The Food and Drug Administration and some members of Congress have turned their eyes toward Seroquel, the second-generation antipsychotic drug used for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. In 10 years on the market, more than 16 million people have been prescribed Seroquel, according to its manufacturer, AstraZeneca. Global sales of Seroquel were $3.4 billion in 2006, a 24% increase.

Seroquel lawyers in Florida have filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of patients who took the popular antipsychotic drug. They claim that AstraZeneca was aware of the risk of diabetes but did not properly warn doctors or patients. In addition, the lawsuit claims that AstraZeneca engaged in off-label marketing of Seroquel.
