Two women who developed eye infections after using the contact lens solution ReNu with MoistureLoc have filed a lawsuit against its manufacturer, Bausch & Lomb. Melissa Ippolito and Yomaira Santiago—both of Staten Island, New York—allege in their ReNu lawsuit that using the contact lens solution caused them to develop symptoms of Fusarium keratitis. As a result of their infections, both women lost some vision in one eye.

Although the first of many ReNu lawsuits are only beginning to make their way to court, legal experts predict that many more could be on the way in the near future. Estimates by some ReNu attorneys say that up to 1,000 ReNu lawsuits could eventually be filed.

Proceedings in the first round of ReNu lawsuits against Bausch & Lomb are scheduled to begin next week in South Carolina. Lawyers from Bausch & Lomb will meet with ReNu attorneys and their clients from 80 cases to exchange information. After a judge oversees the exchange of documents and information, the cases will be returned to their original location for trial. Most of the ReNu lawsuits that have been filed so far are scheduled to go to trial between a year and 18 months from now.

Bausch & Lomb says that it is more than two-thirds of the way to correcting all of the regulatory violations at its Greenville, South Carolina plant that were cited by the Food and Drug Administration in an October letter to the company. It says, however, that the agency’s concern will not be met until the FDA has the chance to review the corrections.

Officials with the Food and Drug Administration have criticized Bausch & Lomb for its failure to quickly report almost three dozen eye infections linked to its ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution.

A financial analyst with the Prudential Equity Group is predicting a bleak short-term financial future for Bausch & Lomb. Larry Biegelsen says that new competition in the contact lens market, a lack of new products and financial troubles will halt the company’s growth for 12 to 18 months.
