Bayer AG says that it will completely remove all remaining supplies of its heart surgery drug Trasylol from the U.S. market. The decision to issue the Trasylol recall was made following the publication of a new study which found that the drug could significantly increase a patient’s risk of death compared with two cheaper alternatives.

A leading medical researcher says that as many as 22,000 lives could have been saved if U.S. regulators have moved more quickly to recall the heart surgery drug Trasylol. Bayer AG, the manufacturer of the drug, suspended marketing of Trasylol in November 2007 after the preliminary results of a Canadian study revealed an increased risk of death and other Trasylol side effects.

Two new studies have confirmed that the heart surgery drug Trasylol can increase patients’ risk of death and kidney damage. The drug is given to patients during heart surgery in order to prevent bleeding. Bayer AG, the manufacturer of Trasylol, suspended its marketing of the drug in November 2007 when the preliminary results from a Canadian drug trial revealed an increased risk of Trasylol side effects.

The chairman of a Food and Drug Administration advisory panel says that he would have voted to pull the heart surgery drug Trasylol off the market if he had known about the existence of a study highlighting the risk of Trasylol side effects. Bayer AG, the manufacturer of Trasylol, announced in November 2007 that it would stop sales of the drug worldwide due to the increased risk of side effects.

Britain’s Commission on Human Medicines has suspended the sales license for the heart surgery drug Trasylol over safety concerns. Bayer AG, the manufacturer of the drug, decided to stop selling Trasylol in November due to pressure from the Food and Drug Administration and two Canadian studies which had linked the drug to an increased risk of death.
