What is Onglyza?

Onglyza is a Type 2 Diabetes medication manufactured and sold by AstraZeneca and Brystol Myers-Squibb. Onglyza, and other Type 2 diabetes medications such as Januivia, have been linked by studies to increased risks of pancreatitis, thyroid and pancreatic cancer, as well as other potentially serious and life-threatening side effects including heart disease/failure.

Onglyza Uses & Information on Type 2 Diabetes Drugs

Onglyza (common name: saxagliptin) and Januivia are manufactured and designed to control high blood sugar in Type 2 diabetics. Incretin-based therapies, a group of drugs for Type 2 diabetes sufferers, belong to a class of drugs called DPP-4 Inhibitors. This class of drugs is designed to promote insulin secretion from the pancreas and to prevent the liver from making excess sugar.

Onglyza Popularity

Onglyza’s marketers claim that Onglyza controls blood sugar levels while discouraging weight gain, a common side effect in other diabetes medications. Onglyza, which made $709 million in sales in 2012, is expected to gain even more popularity in the coming years, with some reports predicting $2.47 billion in sales by 2018.
