Veteran film and television actor David Nicholls—who appeared in such blockbusters as “Gangs of New York” and “Gladiator”—has died of mesothelioma. In addition to his acting career, Nicholls worked to raise awareness about mesothelioma and the dangers of asbestos exposure.

More than 1,000 people have died from fentanyl overdoses involving an illegal street version of the drug, an investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found. Fentanyl is a painkiller 80 times more potent than morphine which is given to patients with severe, chronic pain, such as from cancer.

Health officials in southern Nevada say that staff at the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada may have known that both of the patients who were the source of the Las Vegas hepatitis scare were infected before they received treatment. Officials with the Southern Nevada Health District identified the two patients as the source of the hepatitis outbreak this week.

An Alabama woman and her husband have filed a Digitek lawsuit in Federal court against the manufacturer of the drug, Actavis Totowa. The lawsuit accuses the company of manufacturing a defective product that caused her to suffer serious Digitek side effects.

The manufacturer of the congestive heart failure drug Digitek is facing at least nine federal lawsuits in New Jersey, including one in which a patients died after receiving a defective dose of the drug. Actavis Totowa issued a nationwide Digitek recall in April after it was revealed that the drug was being manufactured with twice its normal dose, increasing the risk of overdose.

Wyeth Pharmaceuticals has agreed to settle the hormone replacement therapy lawsuits filed by two Las Vegas women against the company. Vesta Woodhouse and Annie Woods had alleged that using Wyeth’s HRT drugs Prempro and Premarin caused them to develop breast cancer.
