Victims of workplace asbestos exposure may be eligible for testing at no out of pocket expense to determine if they suffer from mesothelioma, pleural diseases, stomach, throat or lung cancers, asbestosis or other asbestos-related diseases.
Workers who were exposed to asbestos on the job before 1982 for a period of at least five years may be eligible for an asbestos screening at no out of pocket expense. Those eligible for testing may include steelworkers, sandblasters, pipefitters, insulators, carpenters, drywallers, boilermakers, chemical and refinery workers, mill workers, shipyard workers, machinists, veterans of the U.S. Navy or Merchant Marines, millwrights, operators, laborers, painters, railroad workers, welders and other industrial workers.
Testing is done periodically by physicians at a major hospital located near a large city. Alternatively, if you qualify, you may obtain a voucher that may be used at your convenience for private asbestos testing at a medical clinic near you.
During the examination, you will receive a chest x-ray to look for signs of an asbestos-related disease. After your x-ray is examined by a certified physician, you may also receive a pulmonary function test to check your breathing. Doctors will use the information they gather from these tests to detect the possible presence of asbestos and to perform a diagnosis.
