Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was once widely used for construction and industrial applications due to its heat-resistant properties. However, use of asbestos declined significantly in the 1970s, after it was linked to a number of serious forms of cancer and other diseases.

Exposure to asbestos is the only known cause of mesothelioma, a deadly form of cancer that can affect the lining of the heart, lungs or abdomen. Because of its long latency period, individuals who are exposed to asbestos may take up to 50 years before they show the first signs of the disease.

Workers and other individuals who have been exposed to asbestos face an increased risk of certain cancers besides mesothelioma, including lung cancer. Asbestos exposure can also cause asbestosis—scarring of the lung tissue caused by the presence of asbestos—pleural disease and some other conditions.
