Meridia Side Effects
A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that patients taking the diet drug Meridia are at an increased risk of severe cardiovascular side effects. Research found that Meridia users were 28% more likely to suffer a heart attack and 36% more likely to suffer a stroke than those who were given a placebo.
Some experts believe that the risk of side effects of Meridia could be even more significant than the study suggested. More than 900 patients who showed immediate negative reactions to the diet drug were removed from the study, meaning that the true risk of heart attack or stroke could be much greater.
Officials with the European Medicines Agency issued a Meridia recall in January 2010 based on preliminary results from the study. Meridia was recalled in the U.S. in October 2010 after the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning about the risk of side effects from the drug. So far the agency has received reports of at least 17 deaths among Meridia users.
Patients who have used Meridia and have suffered heart attack, stroke or other cardiovascular problems may be eligible to file a lawsuit.
