Oregon woman wins $5.7M in botched cancer diagnosis case

An Oregon jury has awarded $5.7 million to a woman suffering from breast cancer after a radiologist made an incorrect assessment of her mammogram in 2002. The jury determined that a negligent error was made by the clinic that misdiagnosed Julie Joel’s cancer—a mistake that may yet cost the victim her life.

Heart attack patients in hospitals slow to get treatment

A study sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute found that only one-third of hospitals give heart attack patients emergency treatment quickly enough. It showed that even top doctors and hospitals meet the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and American Heart Association guidelines just half of the time.

Chicago jury awards $144M penalty in HMO pregnancy case

$16.5M awarded in Hawaii medical malpractice case

U.S. District Judge David Ezra on Thursday ordered the federal government to pay $16.5 million in damages to the family of a boy who was given carbon dioxide instead of oxygen immediately after his birth. It is the largest single-person verdict in a personal injury case in Hawaii.

A jury has awarded a Florida man $217 million in his medical malpractice lawsuit against the doctor and medical companies whose errors resulted in a paralyzing stroke. The award is believed to be the largest in Florida history for a medical malpractice lawsuit.

Breast cancer misdiagnosis brings medical malpractice lawsuit

Because of a mistaken diagnosis, a 56-year-old woman lived with the belief that she had cancer for more than a year. Lynn Yurosko of Garden City, New York underwent 25 radiation treatments before finally learning that the medical lab that analyzed her biopsy sample accidentally switched it with that of another woman. Yurosko is suing the lab, Quest Diagnostics, for the error. Also named in the medical malpractice suit are the Nassau Radiologic Group and four doctors.

Girl dies after dental procedure

Routine dental surgery that required anesthesia left a 5-year-old girl dead, four days after she slipped into a coma. Diamond Brownridge was undergoing a procedure to have some teeth capped and cavities filled, but she stopped breathing and did not regain consciousness after being sedated.

Two preemies dead in Indianapolis hospital drug mix-up

The wrong dose of the anti-coagulant drug heparin is being blamed for killing two premature babies and jeopardizing the lives of four others. It happened in the neonatal intensive care unit at Indianapolis’ Methodist Hospital.
