A new study has found that women who have taken the osteoporosis drug Fosamax are nearly twice as likely to suffer atrial fibrillation—a type of chronic irregular heartbeat—as women who have never taken the drug. The study was published in the latest issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Three less expensive generic versions of the osteoporosis drug Fosamax will soon go on sale to patients after the drug loses its patent protection this week. Both Teva Pharmaceuticals and Barr Pharmaceuticals are planning to market generic versions of Fosamax, as well as Merck & Co., which owns the patent on the original Fosamax.

Lawyers for patients who have filed Fosamax lawsuits against Merck & Co. have asked a federal judge to grant class action status to their cases. The lawyers also asked the judge to force Merck to create a dental monitoring program that would aim to prevent a need for dental surgery. Fosamax has been linked with a painful jaw condition known as osteonecrosis of the jaw, or jaw death, which can be exacerbated by dental surgery.

An article posted on the website Online Journal has revealed that a new study of the osteoporosis drug Fosamax was written by 14 authors with substantial ties to the pharmaceutical industry—including Merck, the manufacturer of the drug. Published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the study claims that women who stop taking Fosamax after five years have the same risk of side effects as those who keep taking the drug.

A clinical study of 1,099 post-menopausal women shows that those who stop taking Fosamax after five years are no more likely to suffer bone fractures than women who continue to take the drug. The results are to be published in the December 27 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Some dentists in Terre Haute, Indiana are seeing ever more cases of decaying jaw bones, which may be caused by their patients’ use of osteoporosis drugs like Fosamax. Its purpose is to strengthen bones, but it has been proven to have serious Fosamax side effects.
