Former Wilco guitarist died of fentanyl patch overdose

A former guitarist with the rock group Wilco died last month of an accidental fentanyl patch overdose, an Illinois coroner has ruled. Jay Bennett played several instruments and served as an engineer with the group from 1994 until 2001. He was 45 years old. More »

Jury awards $16.5M to family in fentanyl overdose lawsuit

A jury in Chicago has ruled that two drug manufacturers must pay $16.5 million to the family of a woman who died while wearing the Duragesic pain patch. Jurors found that Janice DiCosolo died of a fentanyl overdose caused by the Duragesic patch, which her doctor prescribed to treat a neurological condition. Fentanyl is a narcotic pain reliever found in the pain patch.

Another manufacturer announces fentanyl patch recall

A manufacturer of generic fentanyl patches has announced that it is recalling some of its pain patches because of a manufacturing defect that could cause a potentially fatal overdose. Watson Pharmaceuticals says that it has issued a fentanyl recall to wholesalers and pharmacies for one lot of the pain patch.

CDC blames illegal fentanyl for 1,000+ overdose deaths

More than 1,000 people have died from fentanyl overdoses involving an illegal street version of the drug, an investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found. Fentanyl is a painkiller 80 times more potent than morphine which is given to patients with severe, chronic pain, such as from cancer.

Company issues second fentanyl recall

The manufacturer of a powerful type of pain patch has announced that it is issuing a fentanyl recall for the product. The recall is the second that has been issued for the fentanyl patch in the last week. Last Tuesday three drug companies issued a recall notice for the Duragesic patch and two generic versions of the fentanyl patch.

Makers of fentanyl patch issue recall notice

The manufacturers of fentanyl patches sold under the brand name Duragesic and under generic labels have announced that they are recalling some of the patches because of an increased risk of overdose. The companies said that they were forced to issue the fentanyl recall after learning that some patches may be cut, which could cause the extremely strong painkilling drug they contain to leak and lead to an overdose.
