A new study has found that patients with more than one clogged artery should be treated with heart bypass surgery rather than a drug-coated stent to decrease their risk of heart attack or death. Many doctors have stopped using drug-coated stents in recent years after two studies found that they could increase the risk of blood clots or death compared with bare metal stents.

The Food and Drug Administration has announced that it is planning to release new safety and testing requirements for drug-coated stents within the next few weeks. The agency’s chief of medical devices says that the new regulations were developed in response to concerns about the safety of drug-coated stents and their risk for causing blood clots.

A new Swiss study has found that drug-coated stents are not worth using in most patients because of the high cost of treatment. Researchers at Basel’s University Hospital said in an article published in The Lancet that drug-coated stents should only be used in high risk patients with extremely narrow arteries; for other patients, the high cost of drug-coated stents outweighs any potential benefits.

A new study has revealed that a new Medtronic drug-coated stent has been linked with more blood clots than a rival stent. The study by the Food and Drug Administration compared Medtronic’s Endeavor stent with another drug-coated stent, Taxus, which is manufactured by Boston Scientific.

According to several recent studies, about 60% of drug-coated stents implanted in patients with blocked arteries are being used in ways not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The studies will be published in a series of upcoming articles in the New England Journal of Medicine.
