Chinese customers plan ReNu lawsuit against Bausch & Lomb
A group of 80 Chinese citizens are planning to bring a ReNu lawsuit against Bausch & Lomb in the United States. The members of the group claim that they contracted the fungal eye infection Fusarium keratitis after using Bausch & Lomb’s ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution.
According to Hao Junbo, a lawyer for the group, Bausch & Lomb should have told Chinese authorities about potential safety concerns for ReNu with MoistureLoc after officials in Singapore issued a ReNu recall in February 2006. Doctors in Singapore were the first to notice a connection between MoistureLoc and Fusarium keratitis infections, which can lead to blindness or severe cornea damage.
Bausch & Lomb issued a worldwide ReNu recall in May after infections were reported among ReNu users in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and the U.S. There have been 122 confirmed cases of Fusarium keratitis in the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports. The majority of infections were found among users of ReNu with MoistureLoc.
Lawyers are currently collecting medical reports from the group in preparation for its ReNu lawsuit. Junbo says that the group may file its ReNu lawsuit in New York, where Bausch & Lomb is headquartered, although it has not ruled out the possibility of filing the suit elsewhere.
