The family of a Pennsylvania boy has reached a $23 million settlement in their cerebral palsy lawsuit against the hospital where he was born. The lawsuit alleged that Pittsburgh’s West Penn Hospital committed negligence during the delivery of Grady Jordan, causing him to develop cerebral palsy symptoms. Several cerebral palsy lawyers say that the settlement is the largest they had ever seen.

A survey published in the British magazine Pregnancy & Birth has found that more than nine in 10 women are unaware of a serious bacterial infection that can lead to cerebral palsy or death in newborns.

A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association has identified several prenatal and delivery risk factors for cerebral palsy. The study also detailed findings from MRI scans of children with the disease that doctors say may help in treating cerebral palsy symptoms.

An 8-year-old girl who suffered serious birth injuries has been awarded $1.1 million by a jury in Wood County, Ohio. After Madelyn Instone’s right arm was permanently paralyzed, her parents filed suit against the late Dr. Raymond Hoag, his obstetrics practice and his estate.

According to a recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine, ACE inhibitors (angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors; ACEIs) used for treating high blood pressure can cause cerebral palsy or other serious birth defects when taken in the first trimester of pregnancy. Researchers determined that women who took ACE inhibitors during their first trimester of pregnancy doubled their likelihood of delivering child with a major birth defect, especially those in the central nervous system and cardiovascular system.
