Documents link Accutane to stomach diseases

The first of nearly 500 Accutane lawsuits against Hoffman-La Roche Inc. is scheduled to begin today in Illinois. Plaintiffs in the lawsuits allege that using the acne medication caused them to develop gastrointestinal diseases that range from the occasional flare-up to severe conditions requiring colon-removal surgery.

FDA says Accutane program clumsy but necessary

Doctors and patients are not pleased about a new federal program designed to regulate Accutane use. The program, known as iPLEDGE, requires the registration of any wholesaler who sells, pharmacist who dispenses, doctor who prescribes or patient who takes Accutane. Doctors have complained about waiting on the phone with iPLEDGE call centers, while patients are angered that they sometimes aren’t able to fill their Accutane prescriptions because of mix-ups.

Study finds link between Accutane and bowel disease

A study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology has found a link between the acne drug Accutane and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Although experts have long suspected a connection between Accutane and IBD, the new study is the first scientific confirmation of it.
